Therapeutically-Applied Table-Top Role-Playing Games

How does slaying dragons, finding treasure, and saving a village from a rouge wizard help me with my mental health?

Let me tell you!

What is TA-RPG: Therapeutically Applied-Role Playing Games?

TA-RPG integrates Role Playing Games (RPGs) such as Dungeons and Dragons with established psychotherapeutic approaches like Systems Theory and Play Therapy. This therapeutic approach facilitates skill development for individuals. Initially designed to enhance social skills, emotional regulation, and executive functioning, TA-RPGs have been adapted to meet the diverse needs of individuals with conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADHD), Sensory Processing, Social Anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and others.

The American Psychological Association has published a variety of studies showcasing the efficacy of utilizing RPG’s in a therapeutic setting to improve treatment outcomes. Therapeutic game groups are tailored to four-six client who continue in a series of games (campaigns) for several weeks. TA-RPG’s include therapeutically-applied discussions at the end of each session, encouraging clients to think how they will apply the skills discussed and practiced in session in their everyday lives. The goal is to equip participants with therapeutic tools they can apply in real life, from basic social skills to coping mechanisms for anxiety, depression, trauma, and ADHD.

While engaging and enjoyable, TA-RPGs provide an opportunity for therapeutic skill acquisition, practice, and development in a small group setting with approximately four to six individuals. TA-RPG’s can also be incorporated in individual counseling sessions, focusing on emotional regulation and problem solving skill development. Led by Aleeza Zocchi, Licensed Professional Counselor and trained in the Game To Grow TA-RPG method (your Dungeon Master).
